“Patchwork Musik” (“Patchwork Music”) is a series of flexible pieces for use in Music Schools. The first idea for the pieces came from flutist and music school teacher Anne Fontenay, who wanted a piece, which could be played by any combination of students, and which also invites the students to be a part of the composition proces.
Each page in “Patchwork Musik” is divided into 4 parts, which can be flipped through individually. For each part of the page, the student can choose between a number of melodies, noise parts or silence, all of which fit together. There are infinite combination possibilities, and any combination of instruments can play together.
“Isfjeldet” is for most students in a music school, apart from the very beginners or the most advanced students. Students of different levels can play together, because the different parts in the piece are written in different difficulties.
“Patchwork Musik – Isfjeldet” was first performed by students at Manitsoq Music School in Greenland in October 2018.
