My first string quartet. The first version of the piece was written in 2011 and never performed. The revised version was first performed by Latvian ReDo in Vilnius in 2012.
This piece was a turning point for me. After many frustrations with complicated systems which seldom sounded as nice as they looked on paper, along with a inferiority complex which led me to think that I had to write more complicated music than I was able to, I finally started writing a piece for 1 note.
I chose to write for string quartet, a set instrumentation I had not written for before. I chose the least remarkable (neither the highest nor the lowest) of the open strings on all the instruments in the string quartet: the D, to be the only note played in the piece.
After this piece I started working with unison, or almost unison, and thinking more about diffences in timbre than complex rows of numbers.
