“Under vandspejlet” (“Below water level”) was written for and first performed by Olle Davidsson. It was commissioned by Copenhagen Phil as a part of their series “Cph Phil 4’33” in which composers were asked to fill in Cage’s silence with music for a soloist from the orchestra.
In the piece, a melody in 5/4 moves down the contrabass from the lowest notes into the very highest register, where the bass becomes almost childlike in it’s sound.
